Interested in joining the Whiteman Lab?

July 2025

Thank you for your interest. We are looking for PhD students and postdoctoral fellows to join the lab in the coming year. Noah now recruits PhD students through the rotation systems in Molecular and Cell Biology and the Graduate Group in Microbiology at UC-Berkeley (and potentially through the Neuroscience program, through the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute). Noah is happy to help students with fellowship applications, including NSF GRFPs. We have hosted eight students with NSF GRFPs, who have all gone onto academic postdoctoral fellowships and eventually either industry or as permanent academic positions. The most ideal support consists of individual fellowships as the core funding, paired with supplemental funding from the lab, training grant stints, and teaching as a Graduate Student Instructor.

We are also now looking for postdoctoral candidates and are particularly interested in those who would like to write fellowship applications (Noah can help facilitate these as well with enough lead time). Of particular note to US citizens and permanent residents is that the NIH has NRSA’s (F32s) that Noah could sponsor because of his active NIH MIRA grant. The F32 fellowships provide salary support and Noah’s grant would help fund the research.

If you think our lab is potentially a good fit, please email Noah and attach your CV and specific information on your background and interests, as well as what you might like to work on should you become a lab member.

Here are some potential funding avenues:
